Borer employs a combination of Ethernet and Controller Area Network to facilitate communications between field devices. All field devices communicate between each other and / or the common database over a CAN. The CAN topology must be designed as close as possible to a single trunk line structure to avoid signal reflections. However, in real world situations the installer will often need to extend a trunk line beyond its maximum signal carrying capabilities, create branches off the main trunk line or undertake point to point communications. Hubs allow the installer to overcome these obstacles by receiving and validating the incoming messages before retransmitting them. This filters out all line noise.
