What does IP mean to Access Control?

More than just integration and savings on running cables!

Borer has really maximised the benefits of IP when it comes to Access Control, which is what makes the Borer system so unique. IP has enabled manufacturers to integrate, connect sites, save on running cables by using existing networks, but what else can true networking technology bring to Access Control over the existing Legacy Architecture? By integrating IP/LAN with CAN (Controller Area Network) Borer has considerably reduced the amount of equipment deployed and uses a high level of integration. Further to this, our components are extremely power frugal and allow you to use "inline power" or "Power Over Ethernet" techniques. In most cases, you can run your power and data over a single cat5 cable to each reader without the need of installing local fused spurs, power supplies, controller and batteries. But what does this all really mean?

  • You can adhere to regulations like working at heights by installing everything at user level.
  • The cost of installation is reduced, by eliminating the need for mains power at the door.
  • Maintenance is reduced because all the core equipment is located centrally in controlled environments and the use of batteries are minimised.
  • Integrated Reader/Controllers deliver intelligence all the way to the reader head.
  • Most of all, it allows Borer to create a enterprise wide solution for securing hundreds of sites, or can be installed easily on oil rigs, effectively control hundreds of lockers or even use our readers as registration devices in schools!

    Regulations

Are you aware of the regulations that affect your business now or will do in the future? WEEE? ROHS? Working at Heights? Battery Disposal?

    Work at Height Regulations 2005
Regulations apply to all work at height where there is a risk of a fall (April 2005)
Installation & Isolation of mains power
The installation of mains power is limited to suitably qualified & experienced personnel

EU Directives coming into force from 1st July 2006
Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive

Aims to minimise the impacts of electrical and electronic equipment on the environment during their life times and when they become waste
ROHS - Recycle of Hazardous Substances Directive
Will ban the placing on the EU market of new electrical & electronic equipment containing more than set levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) & polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants from 1st July 2006.
Disposal of Batteries Directive drafted 18th July 2005
Aims to maximise the separate collection & recycling of spent batteries & accumulators.
Reduce the disposal of batteries & accumulators. Directive to be adopted by mid 2006.

Further considerations affecting access control installations
    Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)
Employer has the duty to make 'reasonable adjustments' to make sure that an employee is not disadvantaged by their employment arrangements or by any physical feature of the workplace
    Adoption of structured cable systems
    Design of new buildings
Adoption of multifunction smart cards for access control

As a manufacturer, we are aware of these, and we have built immunity into our design philosophy. Want to know more? Contact your Account Executive

    IP Survey

Physical security over IP networks is coming in 2006, claims a survey of IT Directors conducted by Comunica, an IT service provider. The survey shows that out of 100 major companies, 64% have already adopted or plan to adopt physical security over IP. This will enable companies to monitor and control applications and devices all from a web interface. Within the financial sector 31% have implemented the technology already and a further 38% planning to do so this year.

A quarter of the IT Directors from the retail, distribution and transport sector were positive about physical security over IP with a quarter who have already adopted it and a further 52% expecting to do so in the next 12 months.
A quarter of large companies have adopted security over IP with a further 48% planning to implement it this year.

Rick Marshall, Managing Director of Comunica said: "There are many advantages to controlling physical security over IP, including cost reduction resulting from being able to use one network for all the security systems and devices. Also control will be improved and simplified by being able to manage all the security devices on a single platform. The investment in IP based security will also be future proofed as it will also allow other systems such as lifts, lighting, energy and other building management systems to be managed over the IP network as they become IP based."

A third of the IT directors surveyed said that as a result of being able to control physical security systems over IP (such as CCTV, access control, and card readers), this area will become their responsibility instead of the facilities or operations departments.

Rick Marshall concluded, "As IP based devices proliferate, the trend of physical security being controlled by the IT department is a logical step, as this department is already responsible for IT security. Many of the objections to the adoption of security over IP are a result of a need to educate both employees and mangers about the benefits and cost savings that can be achieved."

SLIO Scripting. Did you know our IO devices, has an onboard microprocessor, which you can script yourself to create your own programs. The SLIO88 can be used to automatically arm and disarm intruder alarms in unmanned police stations. When the users present their token, the IO receives an access made input and disarms the intruder panel, and also looks for internal movement from PIRs, and when the last person is out of the building, and no movement is detected, the alarm is armed. Other examples of applications are interlocking doors, and car park control.
